Former Trump chief strategist Bannon: President only has “30 percent chance” of finishing his term

There has been no shortage of far-Left Democrats in Congress who have either called for the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump for no other reason than he exists and he’s president. In fact, just this week, Rep. Brad Sherman of California filed the latest impeachment article, claiming that the president is somehow obstructing investigations into alleged “Russian meddling” in the 2016 election, McClatchy DC reported.

Trump is doing nothing of the kind and in fact, were that the case we’d all have read about it on Twitter because that’s how Trump communicates with, and signals, everyone.

But Trump needn’t worry about impeachment: He should be much more concerned with being removed from office via the 25th Amendment, another tool that unhinged and perpetually angry Democrats have suggested.

On that one, though, they may have much more luck, says Trump’s former top political strategist Steve Bannon, who resigned from the administration in August and is now back to running Breitbart News.

According to McClatchy, which quoted a Vanity Fair article, which claims that Trump recently exclaimed, “I hate everyone in the White House!” and which allegedly quoted some “prominent” Republicans and Trump advisers who “describe a White House in crisis” and a president “consumed by dark moods.”

A White House official denies that Trump ever said that, saying instead that “the president’s mood is good and his outlook on the agenda is very positive.”

It isn’t as if reports of this kind, which have always quoted “sources within the administration” or “close to the president” haven’t been flat-out wrong. In fact, Trump himself lashed out at an NBC News claim that he wanted a ten-fold increase in the country’s nuclear arsenal, which cannot happen without the United States violating arms control agreements and treaties with Russia. [For his part, Trump argued he never said that and that he only wants to ensure our existing arsenal is as modern and “ready to go” as possible — an upgrade process which is currently underway and which actually began during the Obama administration.]

In any event, the Vanity Fair story said Bannon told Trump at one point that he should be more concerned with being removed from office via the 25th Amendment, which says the president can be removed from office if the majority of their cabinet determines the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” The report claimed that Bannon has told people in the past he believes that Trump only has about a 30-percent chance of finishing his first term because there are so many people out to get him. Still, other experts aren’t convinced that Bannon is right and Trump is a hair’s breadth away from removal. Jeffrey Rosen, president of the Constitutional Center, told CBS News the amendment, which was ratified in 1967 after an illness by President Dwight Eisenhower and President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, has only been invoked three times since: Voluntarily, by President Ronald Reagan when he was shot; and twice by President George W. Bush when he was undergoing medical procedures.

“The determination of the president’s disability is really a political question,” Rosen said. “So that means that the Cabinet and the vice president decide what disabled means. It’s not a decision for doctors. It’s not ultimately a medical decision. It’s basically a question of whatever the vice president and cabinet think.”

What’s more, the president can object to the determination and if he does, then the decision goes to Congress, where two-thirds must decide to remove him. That’s a higher standard than in impeachment, which requires two-thirds of the Senate but only a majority of the House.

“It’s easier to impeach than invoke the 25th Amendment,” Rosen said. That’s “why no president has ever been removed under the disability provision” of the amendment.

Still, that Bannon thinks so little of the president’s chances of political survival indicates just how committed the Swamp may be to removing the outsider president from office.
